Responsible Ownership for Exotic Pets

Did you know that Responsible Pet Ownership Month is approaching in February? Responsible pet ownership is important to all of our animal companions, even—and perhaps especially—more unusual pets. Exotic pets can make wonderful pets for the right person, but many of them need a good deal of care to stay happy and healthy. Here, an Indianapolis, IN vet discusses some key aspects of being a responsible exotic pet owner.

While dogs and cats are more than happy to share our lodgings, exotic pets often need very specific environmental conditions in order to thrive. You may need to provide your pet with a large enclosure, or even their own room. Some animals also have specific light, heat, and humidity requirements. Make sure that your pet has a clean, comfy habitat that suits their needs.

Good nutrition is a key part of any pet care routine. Make sure that your furred, feathered, or scaled buddy is getting a safe, suitable, and nourishing diet. Ask your vet for specific advice, as well as for recommendations on safe and unsafe foods, serving sizes, and treats.

Veterinary Care

Providing regular veterinary care is one of the most important things you can do for your pet. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. You’ll also want to get basic care recommendations.

Exotic pets can require a good deal of TLC. Some are also quite expensive to care for. Before adopting, do plenty of research. Find out about what kind of pet your care will require, including diet, housing, and veterinary care needs. Also, learn out about common symptoms of illness, so you know what to watch out for. If you can’t commit to caring for your pet for their entire life, it may be best to hold off.

Buy Wisely

While some exotic pet sellers and breeders truly care about their animals’ welfare, others are only interested in making money. Many exotic pets that are available for adoption have been taken from the wild, and are not happy in captivity. Others can become very large and/or dangerous, and can put fragile ecosystems in peril if they escape. Only buy from reputable breeders and pet stores, and never release a pet into the wild.
